IMPACT is committed to preparing youth (ages 15 to 22) with challenges to take their place in the community and the workplace. Over the years, the number of older youth with serious barriers enrolling in the Youth Achievers Program continued to rise. In response, the YWCA launched IMPACT (September 2005). Built on the premise that high risk youth need a long-term approach to enable them to gain a positive vision for the future-personal and as a member of a larger community-and to develop the social skills they need to understand the consequences of the choices they make every day. For most people, employment is the prerequisite to a meaningful future (self-sufficiency).
While entering the workforce is challenging for most people, it is exceptionally difficult for high risk youth who because of academic challenges and poor school performance, inadequate social skills, socio-economic disadvantage and other factors have suffered barriers to education and employment. IMPACT provides the youth the chance to move forward with their lives. They learn the importance of staying in school, gaining self-confidence, acquiring coping and leadership skills, and learning how to market themselves and perform in today's competitive job market. Through IMPACT, they develop the skills and confidence needed to become lifelong learners, productive workers and responsible, self-sufficient citizens.
